On October 1st 2025, my greatest companion, Penelope the pug, will turn 13. Her story is as much a part of me as my South African roots—a tale of rescue, adventure, and unwavering devotion that has shaped my life and, in many ways, made me a better human.

A True Rescue and a New Beginning
Penelope’s journey began in Bloemfontein in South Africa. She needed not a second chance, but a first one, since the breeders considered her a “runt” and were going to put her to sleep. So, I swooped in, snagged her, and flew her down to Cape Town to meet for the first time. And from the moment we found each other, our connection was undeniable. Her big eyes and curly little tail spoke of resilience and hope, and I promised her a life filled with love and adventure. Little did I know that choosing Penelope would redefine what companionship meant and teach me lessons far beyond loyalty and care.

Across Continents and Through Life’s Changes
Penelope has been by my side through every move—from our first days together in South Africa, through the challenge of moving continents to Connecticut, USA, and later, to the sunny streets of Tampa, Florida. She’s flown thousands of miles, proving herself as adaptable and brave as any traveler. Every city we’ve explored, every road trip we’ve taken Penelope has been my constant, a soothing presence through all the chaos life can bring.

The Heart of Companionship
If you’ve met a pug, you know their gift for love. But Penelope is something special. Her snorts, her stubborn streak, and her bottomless need for cuddles have a way of drawing people in and leaving them changed. I’ve watched her break the ice between strangers, cheer up tired airport staff, and win over every guest who’s crossed our path.
She’s taught me patience in ways only a senior dog can manage, slowing down so we both can savor the little moments—a lazy afternoon nap, a walk in the park, where I end up carrying her, an extra treat just because. Her aging has been bittersweet: every new white hair and slower step a reminder that time is precious and should be celebrated, not mourned.

Making Every Moment Count
Watching Penelope Age is the hardest part of our story. There are days when my heart aches at the thought of losing her; but these feelings are a lesson too. Because of her, I cherish our moments more fiercely—planning new adventures she can still enjoy, creating routines that bring her comfort, and making each day as special as possible.
The love Penelope gives is pure, unconditional, and impossibly loyal. I strive to give the same back to her every day. And I know, without a doubt, that everyone who’s met her—whether in South Africa, the US, or anywhere in between—ends up just a little bit better because of the joy and sweetness she brings.

A Love That’s Impossible to Replace
No matter how many more birthdays we celebrate, what remains is the absolute, irreplaceable bond between me and this remarkable pug. Penelope has made my world bigger, my heart fuller, and my sense of gratitude deeper. To love and be loved by her is a privilege I’ll never take for granted.
Happy (almost) 13th birthday, Penelope. Thank you for every lesson, every cuddle, and every joyful, snorting greeting. Here’s to cherishing each day, for as long as we’re lucky enough to share them.
