Transformed by Travel: Globally Grown – Part 2
The salty air of the Aegean still feels fresh in my memory. In July 2023, I embarked on a journey that started out to be a journey to escape my grief from losing my wife. I unexpectedly became a profound lesson in culture, connection, and ultimately, better leadership. My destination was Urla, a charming coastal town nestled in Izmir, Turkey, with a spontaneous weekend ferry trip across the shimmering water to the Greek island of Chios. What I experienced there, particularly the privilege of witnessing a traditional Turkish wedding, has rippled through both my personal life and the way I lead my company, X Digital and how I show up in the world. The long journey taking us via Germany, was worth every single moment and penny spent on accumulating these wonderful, life changing experiences.

Urla itself was an immersion in a slower, more deliberate pace of life. The scent of delicious cooking hung in the air, the rhythm of conversation in the local cafes was unhurried, and the warmth of the people was instantly embracing. Wandering through the narrow, stone-paved streets, I felt a sense of grounding I hadn’t realized I was missing. This gentle introduction reminded me of how I was still reeling from grief, and it was also a stark contrast to the fast-paced digital world I inhabit as CEO and founder of X Digital in Tampa, Florida.

Then came the wedding. Through a special connection, one of my all-time closest friends in this world, I was invited as her plus one to partake in a multi-day celebration, a vibrant tapestry woven with ancient traditions. From the lady’s night, filled with music and the sharing of blessings, to the joyous procession and the elaborate dance and celebration in the streets, I was completely enveloped in a culture that deeply values community, family, and heartfelt connection.
Witnessing the meticulous preparation, the unwavering support of loved ones, and the sheer joy radiating from the couple and their families was incredibly moving. It struck me how deeply ingrained these values were, permeating every aspect of the celebration. It wasn’t just a ceremony; it was a testament to the strength of human bonds and the importance of shared experiences.
My brief ferry trip to Chios offered another fascinating perspective. Just a short distance across the water, yet distinctly Greek, the island presented a different rhythm, a different architectural style, and a different flavor of hospitality. This juxtaposition, experiencing two distinct yet geographically close cultures, highlighted the beauty and richness that diversity brings. It underscored the idea that even within a relatively small region, vast differences in perspective and approach can exist and thrive.

How did all of this translate to my me as a person and entrepeneur? In more ways than I initially imagined.
Firstly, the experience in Urla cultivated a deeper sense of empathy. Witnessing the genuine care and support within the Turkish community, as well as the exceptional hospitality provided by the hotel owner himself at the unforgettable Ifstici in Izmir, reminded me of the importance of fostering a similar environment within my own life as well as into X Digital. It reinforced the idea that our team is not just a collection of individuals, but a community working towards a common goal. I’ve since been more intentional about creating opportunities for connection, understanding individual needs, and celebrating collective achievements.

Secondly, the multi-day wedding celebration highlighted the power of patience and process. In our fast-paced digital world, we often prioritize speed and immediate results. The wedding, with its deliberate unfolding over several days, showcased the beauty and significance of each step. This has encouraged me to appreciate the process within our projects, to allow for thoughtful development, and to recognize the value in building strong foundations rather than rushing to the finish line.
Thirdly, my exposure to two distinct cultures in close proximity broadened my perspective on innovation and problem-solving. Especially when it comes to providing my clients with Fractional CMO services and how I approach the day to day challenges of life as an immigrant. Seeing different approaches to life and celebration opened my mind to new ways of thinking. It reinforced the idea that there isn’t always one “right” way to do things and that embracing diverse perspectives within our team can lead to more creative and effective solutions.
Finally, the genuine warmth and hospitality I encountered in both Turkey and Greece served as a powerful reminder of the importance of human connection. In the digital realm, it’s easy to get caught up in screens and algorithms. My travels underscored the fundamental human need for genuine interaction and the power of building strong relationships. This has inspired me to prioritize human connection within our company culture, fostering open communication and creating a supportive environment where everyone feels valued.
My Aegean adventure was more than just a vacation; it was an unexpected masterclass in human connection, cultural understanding, and the subtle yet profound ways these experiences can shape us as individuals and as leaders. The echoes of the music, the taste of Turkish coffee, the sharing of delicious meals and the sight of the Aegean Sea at sunset continue to inspire me, reminding me that the most valuable lessons often lie beyond the confines of our everyday routines and within the embrace of new cultures and experiences.

As CEO of X Digital, Pug owner, Cat slave and Outdoor lover, I now lead with a broader perspective, deeper empathy, and a renewed appreciation for the power of human connection—all thanks to the unexpected wisdom gleaned from the shores of Turkey and Greece.
